The question

We have become extraordinary at managing sickness. Have we become as good at understanding health?

We have never had more medicine, more measurement or more information about the human body. And yet many of us feel less certain about what health actually means.

The Sick Century is not an argument against medicine. It is an invitation to ask a harder question: what if becoming better at managing sickness is not the same as becoming better at understanding health?

A note from Neel

Why I am writing this book.

I wrote this book as a doctor, but also as a son, a student of my own heritage and someone increasingly fascinated by the signals we learn to ignore.

It is a conversation between evidence and observation, ancient questions and modern tools, and ultimately about becoming more informed participants in our own health.

Inside the book

What you will explore.

Patterns

The long run-up

Why, in Neel’s experience, more of what reaches an emergency department has a long run-up than we often notice.

Physiology

The system underneath

Stress, rhythm, sleep and recovery, explained plainly.

Modern medicine

What it does brilliantly

And what it was never designed to do.

Lifestyle

The ordinary levers

Sleep, food, movement, nature and the people around us.

Measurement

Your body as data

What wearables and tests can show, and what they cannot.

Ancient observation

Older ways of paying attention

Traditions such as Ayurveda, presented as traditions, alongside the evidence.

Agency

Becoming a participant

Not dependent on anyone, including the author.

Questions

Before you reserve.

When will it be published?

The book is being written now. A publication date will be given only when it is certain. Everyone who reserves hears first.

Does reserving cost anything?

No. Reserving takes a name, an email and a format preference. No card details are taken and nothing is charged.

Will I have to buy it?

No. When the book is ready you will be told the price, the formats and the delivery details, and you can decide then.

Which formats?

Tell us your preference when you reserve. Final formats are confirmed at publication.

Can I reserve from outside the UK?

Yes. Delivery to each country is confirmed at publication, once the details for that country have been checked.

How do I cancel a reservation?

Reply to any email about the book, and your reservation and details are removed.

Is the book medical advice?

No. It is a book about health, written by a doctor. It is not a substitute for your own GP or specialist.
